The most effective way to eliminate these traces left by the passing years on the skin is through aesthetic procedures. Among these procedures, aesthetic interventions involving the use of dermal filler products are prominent. In this article, we will focus on the risks and side effects of the filler procedure performed on our bodies and investigate the potential complications of injectable filler materials.
Dermal filling is one of the most commonly performed procedures by aesthetic specialists worldwide. Treatments are generally successful, and patient satisfaction is high. However, mild and serious complications resulting from the injection of various types of dermal filler substances have been reported. These complications and undesired outcomes include:
Tissue Damage: There is a risk of damaging tissues during needle applications or the injection of filler materials into the skin. In the hands of competent clinicians and experts in the field, this risk is significantly reduced.
Development of Infections: Like many medical procedures, infections can occur after lip filler applications. Care should be taken during the procedure as contact with needles or filler materials can increase the risk of infection.
Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may exhibit allergic reactions to filler materials. Symptoms such as redness, swelling, or itching on the skin indicate an allergic reaction, requiring intervention.
Non-Permanent Results: Some lip filler materials may dissolve over time, leading to a decrease in volume. Individuals may need to undergo a new procedure to achieve the voluminous lips they desire. In this regard, selecting a reputable clinic with expert aestheticians is crucial.
Asymmetry Issues: Lip filler may cause asymmetry problems, and asymmetry issues in the lips can be observed during or after the application. This situation may lead to dissatisfaction and disappointment for the patient, deviating from the goal of achieving a natural and balanced appearance.
Risks of Hyaluronic Acid Injection
Following hyaluronic acid (HA) filler injections, early and delayed complications ranging from mild to severe may occur. Researchers evaluated and treated 28 cases of complications associated with HA fillers that presented to their hospital over a 5-year period from July 2004 to October 2009. The study included 28 patients, with 82.1% being female and 17.9% male. Complications were classified primarily as nodular masses, inflammation, tissue necrosis, and pigmentation disorders. The affected areas, in order of frequency, included the lips and surrounding areas, forehead, nose, nasolabial lines, submental region, cheek area, and crow’s feet lines.
The most concerning complication was alar rim necrosis following nasolabial line injection. Alar rim necrosis is a severe complication, resulting in tissue damage, deformities, and aesthetic issues. This type of complication may arise from poorly performed injection procedures during filler applications or specific conditions in the properties of the filler materials used. Alar rim necrosis, particularly in the nasal area, is a rare complication, especially following nasolabial filler injections. The term “alar” refers to the wing of the nose, and “necrosis” indicates tissue death. When filler materials are injected near the edges of the nose, this condition is defined as the death and damage of tissues due to circulation problems or other factors in that area.
In the event of alar rim necrosis, immediate intervention and treatment are essential. The goal of intervention is to restore circulation and correct damaged tissues. Such complications should be managed by expert and experienced healthcare professionals.
Researchers point out two areas particularly vulnerable to tissue necrosis following filler injections: the glabella and nasal ala regions. While there is no definitive treatment modality for correcting HA filler complications, they have coped with various available treatment modalities aiming to minimize patient morbidity (Ref: Clinical experience with hyaluronic acid-filler complications).
