Among the world’s smallest dogs, Chihuahuas have become extremely popular lately, partly thanks to many celebrities owning one of these adorable companions. They come in two different coat types: short and long-haired. Their fur colors and patterns can vary. Our cute friends range in height from 15 to 23 cm, with ideal weights between 1.8 and 2.7 kg. Chihuahua can be a loyal and harmonious house dog due to its character traits.

Chihuahuas are friendly dogs and though they are very energetic, they don’t need much exercise. Their energetic nature can be satisfied by playing games indoors. However, short walks outside are beneficial for their mental and physical health. Even if you are adopting a new pet, you can easily train them as they respond well to positive reinforcement.

HISTORY: Original Purpose Of Chihuahua Dog Breed

Depictions of dog breeds resembling Chihuahuas in artifacts from ancient civilizations suggest widespread trade connections worldwide and the natural spread of similar dog types among distant cultures is not surprising. However, the origins of the Chihuahua type among the people of Mexico remain a prehistoric mystery.

About a thousand years ago, during the reign of the Toltecs in Mexico, their preferred dog breed was the Techichi, a larger and heavier ancestor of today’s Chihuahua. When the Aztecs conquered the Toltecs in the 12th century, they are known for transforming the Techichi into a smaller and lighter dog. By the 1500s, when Spanish conquerors toppled the Aztec civilization, the Techichi held such cultural importance that it was thought to be among Montezuma’s legendary treasures, though later considered lost forever after Cortez’s conquest.

Yet, these resilient small dogs survived in remote villages. In the mid-1800s, American interest in this breed led to the discovery of many examples in the State of Chihuahua. Thus, this survivor of two lost civilizations gained worldwide fame as the Chihuahua. The first AKC-registered Chihuahua, named Beppie, appeared in 1908.

In the mid-20th century, bandleader Xavier Cugat made significant contributions to the breed’s popularity. More recently, Chihuahuas have captured audiences’ hearts in films such as “Beverly Hills Chihuahua,” “Legally Blonde,” and “Sex and the City.” Additionally, the minor-league baseball team in El Paso, Texas proudly bears the name Chihuahuas.
