Advance dog food reviews
August 28, 2024Is advance a good dog food?
Taste: 4/5
Advance is generally well-liked by most dogs, though some owners report that the smell can be a bit strong. This is manageable if you store the food in an airtight container. A few dogs with sensitive stomachs have experienced digestive upset when transitioning to this food, so it’s advisable to introduce it gradually to avoid any issues. Despite this, most dogs enjoy the taste without any negative reactions, so it’s worth trying.
Ingredients:3/5
Advance’s recipes feature short ingredient lists, which can be beneficial for dogs with sensitivities. However, this simplicity means the food lacks additional ingredients like fruits, vegetables, or superfoods found in other brands. While the food has a balanced mix of vitamins and minerals, these are likely from a pre-mix rather than natural sources, and the absence of detailed information on antioxidants and preservatives raises some concerns about their origins.
Protein Content:4/5
Advance provides a good protein content, exceeding the AAFCO’s minimum recommendation of 18%. Most recipes offer between 22% and 32% protein, ensuring your dog gets sufficient nutrition. However, the protein is primarily sourced from meals rather than whole meats, and there’s no confirmation that these are human-grade. This contributed to a slight deduction in our rating.
Additives: 2/5
Advance’s formulas are quite basic, with minimal added ingredients compared to other brands. Some recipes include Sodium Tripolyphosphate (STPP), which is used to control tartar and dental issues but has raised concerns about potential neurotoxicity and digestive problems. Due to the lack of beneficial additives and the presence of questionable ones, this category received a lower rating.
Variety: 5/5
Advance excels in variety, offering options for different life stages, breed-specific needs, and special diets, including those for dental health, weight management, and allergies. They also provide a range of wet food options. The extensive selection earns a top rating in this category.
Price: 4/5
Advance is not the cheapest option but offers good value considering its ingredient quality. The cost is somewhat justified by the absence of extra ingredients like superfoods. Given that you might supplement your dog’s diet with fresh foods, the price is reasonable, though it’s not the lowest available.
Overall, Advance is a solid choice for many dogs, offering a good balance of taste, protein content, and variety. However, it may not be the best option for dogs with very sensitive stomachs or those needing a variety of added nutritional benefits.

Is advance puppy dry dog food a good choice?
Here are some feedbacks about the food.
Have never had a problem with Advance Puppy:
I have been a Griffon Bruxellois breeder for 25 years and in that time have never had a better dog food. I tested my dogs on many of the so called top brands and had problems with most, then started using Advance Puppy with good success and now for over 10 years I feed all age dogs with the Advance Puppy dry food and dont have any adverse health or other issues with any of my dogs.
Very small dry food which is easy to eat for puppies:
The lady at the pet supplies store recommended this when we were shopping before bringing our mini foxie puppy home. It is a good dry puppy food that becomes soft when mixed with water, as well as having very small pieces for little puppies to manage. It also mixes well with moist dog foods. However, our puppy is very fussy and was never really interested in the Advance dry puppy food, and he often was scratching/itchy. I have since changed to Black Hawk dry puppy food and he loves that and no longer scratching/itching, and his coat is shinier and softer. He seems a healthier, happier puppy now.
Very expensive and caused a very upset tummy, Do not recommend:
For $128 a bag as recommended by pet shop I thought I was buying the very best for my new fur baby however it causes a very upset tummy. Vet has put it down to this food and has said it has happened a number of times to other pups. We got his tummy right then slowly introduced these biscuits back in at 1/3 of his feed, it’s only took one day for his diarrhoea to return. Will throw out the rest of this very expensive bag
Advance dry puppy food:
My puppy refused to eat Supercoat and is now loving Advance. He has been healthy and happy on this dry food and his coat is very shiny. His stools are regular and if normal consistency.
