Envigo Beagle
July 26, 2024Beagles, with their cute facial expressions and their white, black, and brown fur, are among the most beloved pets. Originally classified as hunting dogs, Beagles have an excellent sense of smell. Weighing between 10 – 11 kg and standing 33 – 40 cm tall, they are known for their soft and friendly nature outside of hunting activities. They easily get along with children, other dogs, and strangers. While they can live in apartments, their active nature and love for freedom require regular exercise and opportunities for exploration.
HISTORY OF BEAGLES
The origins of the Beagle are shrouded in mystery, with its name possibly deriving from the Gaelic word *beag* (“little”) or the French term *be’geule*, referring to the sound hounds make while hunting. Reports of small pack-hounds used for hunting rabbits and hares in England predate the Roman invasion of 55 B.C. By the 1500s, smaller hounds, ancestors of today’s Beagle, were popular among English hunters. Known as ‘foot hounds,’ Beagles could be hunted on foot, making them accessible to those who couldn’t afford horses. Introduced to America after the Civil War, Beagles quickly became favored among rabbit hunters. The AKC registered its first Beagle in 1885, and today, hunters in North America continue to praise the breed for its keen nose and enthusiastic rabbit hunting skills.
NUTRITION
Beagles do well on high-quality dog food, whether store-bought or homemade with vet approval. Ensure the diet matches their age (puppy, adult, or senior). Monitor calorie intake to prevent weight gain, as Beagles can easily gain weight. Use treats sparingly and consult your vet about diet concerns. Always provide clean, fresh water.
HEALTH
Ethical breeders screen Beagles for conditions like hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, epilepsy, luxating patella, and eye disorders. Additionally, Beagles should have their ears checked weekly and their teeth brushed regularly.
TRAINING
Beagles benefit greatly from early socialization and puppy training classes. Treats are very effective for training, but Beagles don’t respond well to harsh methods. Patience, positive reinforcement, and a bit of creativity are key to successful training.
GROOMING
The Beagle’s smooth, dense double coat becomes thicker in winter, making spring a prime shedding season, with moderate shedding throughout the year. Weekly brushing with a medium-bristle brush, rubber grooming mitt, or hound glove helps manage loose hair and encourages new growth. Beagles don’t need frequent baths unless they get exceptionally dirty. Regular nail trimming is important to prevent pain and walking issues caused by overly long nails.

Where Are the 4000 Rescued Envigo Beagles Now? –
4000 Beagles
In July(2024), more than a dozen beagles, once confined to harsh conditions as “research models,” gathered in Leesburg for the first time, experiencing grass under their paws and enjoying cupcakes from caring individuals. Just a year earlier, these beagles had been rescued from a facility in Cumberland, Virginia, where they endured appalling conditions: overcrowded cages, filth, rotting food, and inhumane euthanasia practices. Their transition to a life of comfort highlights the stark contrast between their past and present.
Envigo, the company that ran the facility, insisted it treated the beagles humanely, but USDA inspections exposed severe mistreatment. After a lawsuit settlement with the Justice Department, a federal judge ordered the facility’s closure. This led to the largest rescue in the Humane Society of the United States’ history, bringing national attention to the Envigo beagles. In July, thousands of rescued beagles were placed in new homes, with some going to the West, including one adopted by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Many remained in the Mid-Atlantic, where new families connected through Facebook groups and gatherings like the Leesburg reunion. The event featured a backyard decorated with balloons, a tent with birthday tiaras, and a “Paw-ty” banner. The beagles, adorned with “Envigo Survivor” bandannas, reveled in their new freedom, celebrating their transition from research subjects to cherished pets.
