Maltese Terrier, which has a noble appearance with its white, silky and long hair, is among the small dog breeds that have managed to capture your hearts. They have a height of 20 – 25 cm. Their ideal weight varies between 2 – 4 kg. Their lifespan can be up to 15 years. The Maltese Terrier, which is a cute, friendly and intelligent breed, is highly trainable. Its low barking makes it one of the breeds especially suitable for living in an apartment.

Malta, located 60 miles directly south of Sicily in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, has served as a pivotal hub since ancient times. As early as 3500 B.C., it thrived as a bustling seaport and a center of commerce and culture. Over a span of 2,000 years starting from 1500 B.C., Malta was successively controlled by influential maritime powers such as the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, and Normans. This strategic island played a crucial role in trading precious goods like spices, silks, and gemstones, as well as cultural influences, including the introduction of the Maltese dog by the Phoenicians.

TEMPERAMENT AND CHARACTERISTICS

Maltese dogs are affectionate and happiest when close to their owners, enjoying lap time or being by their side. They are energetic and playful but do not require extensive exercise; activities like playing with toys or short walks suffice to keep them fit and happy. They are generally friendly with other pets of similar size and thrive in households where they receive attention and affection.

Maltese are alert and may bark to alert their owners of visitors, showing a protective instinct. Early puppy training and socialization are important to help them become well-adjusted around strangers. They can be prone to separation anxiety and may exhibit behaviors like barking or chewing when left alone. The Maltese breed is generally healthy and long-lived, often reaching double digits in age. Responsible breeders prioritize health screenings for conditions such as luxating patella and heart anomalies like PDA. A Serum Bile Acids test is recommended for puppies to detect liver issues. Research continues on conditions like encephalitis (GME) with hopes for future genetic testing. Regular dental care, including daily brushing and veterinary cleanings, is essential for their well-being. These practices, supported by organizations like the American Maltese Association, help ensure Maltese dogs lead healthy lives.

NUTRITION

Maltese dogs thrive on high-quality dog food, whether commercially manufactured or prepared at home under veterinary guidance. It’s essential to choose a diet suitable for their age—puppy, adult, or senior—and monitor calorie intake to prevent weight gain, as some Maltese are prone to obesity. While treats can aid in training, moderation is key to avoid overfeeding. Understanding which human foods are safe for dogs is important, and consulting with a vet about any dietary concerns or weight management issues is advisable. Always ensure your Maltese has access to clean, fresh water at all times to maintain their health and well-being.

TRAINING

Excessive tear-staining around their eyes may require a vet visit for diagnosis and treatment options.
