Cons of Boston Terriers

Here are list of cons of owning Boston Terriers:

  • Boston Terriers are inside dogs, they shouldn’t be kept outdoors even during the day in mild temps.Do not think all dogs can be outside dogs.
  • These pups have a hard time regulating body temperature due to their breathing structure, head structure and thin hair. They can have issues in extreme hot or cold temps, so they should be monitored closely in the summer and clothed (sweaters/jackets) in the winter.
  • They are very high energy, so they need a lot of mental stimulation and physical exercise or they can become destructive. If you work all day and come home expecting your dog to hang out on the couch with you then consider another breed.
  • Boston Terriers are an intelligent breed, which is good, but can be bad too cause they will figure out how to get what they want.
  • These dogs are people oriented, they like to please their people. They are in your face, pushy dogs with big personality. Most are kissers/lickers, so if you don’t want a dogs tongue in your mouth you might not want this breed lol. They are jumpers and they will jump on you, kids, guests, it’s a hard thing to break.
  • They have a rough play style, can be too mouthy and rough for young kids and other breeds of dogs. They have been called mini-boxers due to their similiar traits, bog dog in a little body mentality. They can destroy toys very quickly.
  • There are some health concerns…these pups do best on a high quality grain free diet, they can have sensitive systems and are know to be gassy/stinky. Some need their butts wiped after a potty due to the tail structure. Food sensitivities and environmental allergies are fairly common.
  • Their can be problems with their breathing structures which could need surgery to correct, called Brachycephalic Syndrome. Their eyes can have issues, also ears. They can have back/spine problems and knee problems.
  • She is gassy but it is tolerable
  • Hypoallergenic: Boston Terriers  are not hypoallergenic that is why they are not good choice for allergy sufferers .
  • Impulse to Wander or Roam: Boston Terriers like to explore around that is why they have high wanderlust potential,
  • Tolerates Being Left Alone: Boston Terriers do not like being left alone, they do best when a family member is at home during the day or if their workplace is dog-friendly so they can take the dog at work.
  • Office Friendly: Boston Terrier is not office friendly.
  • Good For First Time Owners: Boston Terriers are not good for first time owners.
